“Change” represents an upsetting, either positively or negatively, of an equilibrium between challenges and the capabilities required to meet those challenges. Change shifts reality away from expectations. If there is a dramatic departure from expectations, leading to a perceived loss of control, people normally feel uncomfortable.
From an organisational perspective, “change” is anything that is occurring within an organisation where the cost of failure is high. An organisation must devote time and energy to help its people adjust to the change. Organisations that fail to properly address the impact of change on their people will inadvertently encourage dysfunctional behaviour, including decreased communication, an entrenched resistance to the change, and increased absenteeism, illness or departures.
mbh assists organisations in minimising the risks and maximising the value of change by facilitating the maturation of their change management capabilities. mbh’s services include the development of methodologies and consulting support for:
Assessment and benchmark reports. These gauge organisations’ present readiness for change and highlight potential problem areas to achieving desired outcomes. An example of this would be a project management (PM) maturity benchmark audit and report. However, this service could encompass other interrelated disciplines, such as strategic management and portfolio management.
Facilitated workshops. ½ to 1-day workshops to help executives and staff involved in change initiatives understand benchmark report results and how change is likely to impact areas of their organisation. The workshop output will be used to develop the change management and stakeholder and communication action plans. These workshops consist of creative brainstorming games and techniques, such as pin boards and colour cards, to provide an interesting and exhilarating environment for discussion. We document the workshop output in detail and provide our conclusions and suggestions for next steps.
Online toolkit and training. We provide organisations with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement successful change initiatives. Via our web-based platform UniPhi, we provide tested change management methodologies, guidelines, presentations, checklists and templates. Clients can easily download and print these materials after accessing the internet, receiving authorisation and going to the UniPhi site (www.uniphi.com.au).
Stakeholder and communication action plans. We help clients develop comprehensive stakeholder action plans, which provide them with a detailed and organised tool for identifying and keeping track of stakeholders that are vital to the success or failure of a project. This includes a communication plan that assists in developing the key messages disseminated to stakeholders, as well as the most appropriate mix of media channels to use for best results. Organisations can then determine what strategy and tactics should be implemented to influence these stakeholders in a way that optimises the potential for a successful project result.
Ongoing coaching. We provide ongoing coaching for organisations who must continue to manage the impacts of change. We offer a 2-day change manager training course for project team members in leadership positions that covers change management theory and useful tools and techniques for managing change. The courses are conducted through a mixture of lectures, case studies and exercises. The lecture sessions are illustrated by examples and participants are encouraged to share experiences in the lecture sessions and syndicate exercises.
